Your Creative Legacy: Applying Susan's Wisdom to Your Own Career

You've spent this masterclass inside the mind of one of advertising's most remarkable creative leaders. You've traced Susan Credle's path from a receptionist filling in for bathroom breaks at BBDO to Global Chief Creative Officer of FCB. You've seen how she built landmark campaigns, led with conviction, and filtered every creative decision through a single, deceptively simple question: Is it interesting?

Now it's your turn.

But here's the real question this exercise is asking: What does any of this mean for you? A great life story is only as valuable as the self-reflection it triggers. Susan's journey isn't a highlight reel to admire from a distance — it's a mirror. The point is to look into it and ask hard questions about your own creative life, your own instincts, and your own next move.

And there's a second question this exercise demands you sit with: What do these lessons mean in the age of AI? The industry Susan built her career in is being fundamentally transformed. AI systems can now generate copy, conceive visuals, and assist in building campaigns at a scale and speed no human team can match alone. That changes the stakes for every creative professional. It doesn't make Susan's lessons obsolete — it makes them more urgent. Because when AI can produce the competent and the adequate, the only thing that stands out is the genuinely interesting. The question is how you carry that standard into a world where the tools have never been more powerful — or more available to everyone else.

This capstone exercise isn't about summarizing what you've learned. It's about translating Susan's blueprint into something that belongs entirely to you — your creative philosophy, your instincts, your next move.

---

Before you begin, find 30–45 minutes of uninterrupted time. Grab a notebook or open a blank document. This exercise works best when you write without editing yourself — get the thoughts out first, refine later.

You'll be working through four parts, each building on the last.

---

Part 1: Write Your Creative Philosophy (10–15 minutes)

Susan didn't stumble into her creative beliefs — she built them over decades of observation, mentorship, and making work. Her philosophy isn't a tagline. It's a set of convictions that guided every decision she made, from the M&M's characters to how she led teams.

Answer these three questions in writing:

1. What do you believe creativity is for? Not in the abstract — in your specific work. Is it to challenge assumptions? Build emotional connection? Solve business problems in unexpected ways? Write your honest answer.

2. What is the one creative standard you refuse to compromise on? Susan's was interesting. Every idea had to pass that test. What's yours? (If you don't have one yet, this exercise will help you find it.)

3. What kind of work do you want to be known for in five years? Not your job title — the work itself. Describe it in two or three sentences.

---

Part 2: Map Your Creative Thread (10 minutes)

Susan's career looks like a straight line in retrospect, but it was built on a consistent creative instinct — not a series of unrelated jobs. Even her time as a receptionist became a masterclass in self-directed learning. She turned BBDO into her university.

Look back at your own career (or creative life, if you're earlier in your journey) and answer:

1. What's the through-line? What creative instinct or interest has shown up again and again, even in jobs or projects that seemed unrelated?

2. Who has been your Phil Dusenberry? Identify one person — a mentor, a colleague, a manager — who raised your creative standard just by being around them. What specifically did you absorb from them?

3. What's your "receptionist moment"? Identify a time you were underestimated, overlooked, or started at the bottom of something. What did you do with that position? What could you still do with it?

---

Part 3: Define Your Next Step (5–10 minutes)

Susan's mother gave her advice that became a career strategy: surround yourself with the best people and you have a better chance of being good. It's not a platitude — it's a deliberate, actionable choice.

Write down:

1. One person or environment that would raise your creative game — a team, a company, a community, a collaborator. Be specific. Name them if you can.

2. One idea you've been sitting on that you haven't pitched, published, or pursued. Run it through Susan's filter: Is it interesting? If yes, write down the single next action that would move it forward.

3. One belief about your own career ceiling that Susan's story challenges. Write it down — and then write one sentence that dismantles it.

---

Part 4: Reckon With AI (5–10 minutes)

This is the part most creative professionals skip — and can't afford to.

AI is not a future threat. It is a present reality reshaping how marketing is made, how briefs are written, how ideas are generated, and how campaigns are produced. The tools are powerful. They are also available to everyone. That's the point.

When everyone has access to the same power tools, the differentiator is no longer the tool — it's the judgment, taste, and creative conviction of the person using it. Susan's career was built on exactly those things. That's why her lessons matter more now, not less.

Answer these questions in writing:

1. How is AI already present in your work — or in the work around you? Be honest and specific. Where are you using it, avoiding it, or watching others use it?

2. What does "interesting" mean when AI can produce competent? If an AI system can generate a functional headline, a passable concept, or a serviceable campaign, what is the human creative's job now? Write your answer. It doesn't have to be final — it has to be honest.

3. What is the creative standard you bring that AI cannot replicate? This isn't a question about technology. It's a question about you — your point of view, your instincts, your lived experience. What do you carry into a room, or into a brief, that no system can generate? Write it down.

4. Where do you need to raise your game? AI will accelerate the gap between creatives who have a genuine philosophy and those who don't. Susan's filter — Is it interesting? — is more powerful in an AI-assisted world than it was before, because now it's the only filter that actually separates human creative judgment from machine output. What would it look like for you to apply that standard more rigorously, starting now?

---

By the end of this exercise, you'll have a working draft of your creative philosophy — not a polished manifesto, but a real, honest articulation of what you believe and how you want to work.

You'll also have a clearer picture of the thread that connects your creative instincts across your career, at least one concrete next step, and a direct reckoning with what it means to do creative work in an industry being transformed by AI.

Most importantly, you'll have done the one thing a great story can't do for you on its own: turned someone else's lessons into your own self-reflection.

Keep this document. Return to it in six months. The best creative careers aren't built in a single leap. They're built the way Susan built hers — one interesting decision at a time. That was true when she started as a receptionist. It's true now, in a world of AI. It will still be true when the next wave of tools arrives.

The question never changes. Is it interesting? The pressure to answer it honestly — and humanly — only grows.
