Before the Truth campaign, anti-tobacco advertising had a problem. Not a budget problem, not a media problem โ a strategic problem so fundamental that the advertising was actually making things worse.
Every single anti-smoking message aimed at teenagers followed the same playbook: smoking will make you sick. Smoking will kill you. Smoking is bad. Health warnings, scary statistics, cautionary tales. Decades of it. Billions of dollars spent. And the result? Kids kept smoking. In many cases, the messaging made cigarettes feel more appealing โ dangerous, rebellious, adult. The very thing these campaigns were trying to prevent, they were accidentally reinforcing.
Chuck Porter and the team at Crispin Porter were handed the Florida state anti-tobacco account and faced a brutal truth early on: they almost gave the money back. As Chuck put it, they looked at the brief and thought there was genuinely nothing they could do โ because everything that had ever been tried had failed. That moment of near-surrender is actually where the breakthrough began.
Pro Tip: When every previous attempt at solving a problem has failed, that's not a reason to give up โ it's a signal that everyone has been solving the wrong problem. The brief you're handed is rarely the brief you should be answering.
